Motek. Next Level.

When Motek's central warehouse was to be upgraded to become the country's greenest logistics building, it needed new functions and integration with SAP and Autostore. Pearl Group was selected to perform the upgrade, having been a good partner for Motek for many years.

DSC00386

Motek supplies tools, fasteners, and services for construction, construction, and industry. The company has 33 stores spread across the country and a total of over 360 employees. Sustainability is in focus, and Motek is owned by Aspelin Ramm, who is recognized as a pioneer in urban environments and environmentally friendly buildings.

Motek has used SAP since 2014, but when upgrading the central warehouse in Oslo, there was a need for new functionality and integration with a complex logistics solution consisting of both SAP, EWM, and Autostore.

Initially, the upgrade would involve demolition and rebuilding in three phases, with a working warehouse throughout the construction period. However, the initial plan proved complicated, and the owner of Motek and the building, Aspelin Ramm, decided to demolish the entire building. It was to be replaced with a new building – Norway's greenest logistics building – and in the meantime, the warehouse would move to a temporary location at Frogner outside Oslo.

Therefore, they needed a new and temporary storage solution at Frogner and also a solution that was ready for implementation back at Alnabru. It was also to be optimized with more functions when the new building was completed.

The company wanted to use the opportunities in the integration between SAP EWM and Autostore – both in the temporary warehouse and its future central warehouse.

The standard apps were included in the temporary warehouse, and preparations were made for the new warehouse at Alnabru to integrate with a lane and sorting facility and a Kardex warehouse automation system.

This gave them two tailor-made solutions that could handle an extensive flow of goods, simple planning of warehouse processes, and utilization of resources throughout the period. Not least, a very space- and energy-efficient solution.

By using Pearl's EWM Autostore integration, Motek had the entire warehouse process in one app throughout the entire moving period: From moving to the temporary warehouse, during the construction period, through the new moving period, and up until the optimized solution was in place in the new central warehouse.

When the new building was ready, they were equipped for the future with effortless system operation and user-friendly information about workload, orders, tasks, and stock content in real-time. The new solution also ensures a reduction in user errors, which results in increased warehouse efficiency.

As a result of Pearl's knowledge and experience in building complex and efficient logistics solutions, the process went smoothly and without downtime. The consultants on the project had a unique background and expertise, with a combination of a technical understanding and business understanding from their experience with logistics operations.

Sustainable building and solution
When Motek grew out of its old warehouse, sustainability was the focus for constructing the new one. The building has become one of Norway's most sustainable logistics buildings. It houses, among other things, fast-charging stations for electric vans, a flower meadow on the roof, a park with beehives, and an extensive facility for solar energy.

It also includes one of the most space- and energy-efficient solutions on the market with EWM Autostore. The 10,400 m² warehouse is utilized with over 50 percent of the stock in Autostore, which consists of over 33,600 cases. It is also optimized and utilized with pallet spaces, an automatic lift, and long goods racks – accessible for everyone in Motek through a simple user interface.

The solution is tailored to handle Motek's large workload and extensive product flow and ensures efficiency with simple and precise guidance for all users. The new main warehouse facilitates the planned future growth of Motek.

" "The unique experience and presence of Pearl Group has meant that we have been able to carry out moving processes and establish a new modern warehouse in a good and safe way. Pearl's experienced consultants have been crucial to the successful project."

// Jørn Sæbø, CFO and Head of Logistics at Motek
