Norway's greenest logistics building with SAP EWM and Autostore integration

Modern glass-fronted building with Motek signage and red banner, featuring a covered entrance area with glass walls and metal cladding

Motek, part of the Aspelin Ramm group, transformed its central warehouse operations by building Norway's greenest logistics building while maintaining continuous operations. When the original phased renovation proved too complex, the company chose to demolish and rebuild entirely, requiring temporary relocation to Frogner. Pearl Group managed the intricate project, integrating SAP EWM with Autostore automation both in the temporary facility and the new 10,400 m² sustainable warehouse. The solution handles over 33,600 storage bins with 50% of inventory in Autostore, delivering space-efficient operations, reduced errors, and real-time visibility - all without operational downtime.

When Motek decided to upgrade its central warehouse in Oslo, the project quickly became more complex than anticipated. The company, which has used SAP since 2014, needed new functionality and integration with advanced logistics solutions including SAP EWM and Autostore.

The initial plan involved a three-phase renovation with continuous warehouse operations throughout construction. However, this approach proved too complicated. Aspelin Ramm, Motek's parent company and building owner, made the strategic decision to demolish the entire facility and construct Norway's greenest logistics building from scratch.

This meant Motek needed two separate solutions: a temporary warehouse at Frogner outside Oslo to maintain operations during construction, and a future-ready system optimized for the new automated facility at Alnabru.

Pearl Group designed a comprehensive approach leveraging the integration capabilities between SAP EWM and Autostore for both phases of the project. The temporary warehouse at Frogner included standard applications to maintain operations, while preparations were made for the advanced new facility.

The new Alnabru warehouse was designed to integrate with lane and sorting facilities plus a Kardex warehouse automation system. This created two tailored solutions capable of handling Motek's extensive product flow with efficient warehouse process planning and optimal resource utilization throughout the transition period.

Pearl's EWM Autostore integration enabled Motek to manage the entire warehouse process through a single application throughout the complex transition - from the initial move to temporary facilities, through the construction period, and finally to the optimized solution in the new building.

The new facility provides effortless system operation with user-friendly, real-time information about workload, orders, tasks, and inventory levels. The integrated solution significantly reduces user errors, resulting in increased warehouse efficiency and accuracy.

The new 10,400 m² warehouse represents one of Norway's most sustainable logistics buildings, featuring electric van charging stations, rooftop gardens with beehives, and extensive solar energy facilities. The EWM Autostore solution maximizes space efficiency, with over 50% of inventory stored in 33,600 automated bins, complemented by pallet spaces, automatic lifts, and long goods racks accessible through a simple user interface.

The solution handles Motek's large workload and extensive product flow while providing precise guidance for all users, positioning the company for planned future growth.

"The unique experience and presence of Pearl Group has meant that we have been able to carry out moving processes and establish a new modern warehouse in a good and safe way. Pearl's experienced consultants have been crucial to the successful project," says Jørn Sæbø, CFO and Head of Logistics at Motek.
